With only a two-lane roadway to serve a fast-growing and quickly developing area, Lincoln’s Northwest 48th Street is one of the main roads the city has targeted for improvement. To help the city achieve its goals, Olsson Associates was recently selected to provide the preliminary and final engineering design for Lincoln's Northwest 48th Street, West O to West Adams Roadway Improvement Project. As part of the project, Olsson will work closely with the city, area businesses and stakeholders, and the public to develop the design for a new, four-lane divided road that serves this high-profile and highly important corridor.
Northwest 48th Street is a unique and valuable roadway to the West Lincoln residents, as it serves as the area’s only continuous north/south roadway connection between “O” Street (U.S. 6) and U.S. 34. Its value is magnified by the fact that nearly all connections east of this 4.5 mile segment of roadway are severed by the presence of the Lincoln Municipal Airport.
“The project will be a great benefit to the area’s residents. It will also allow Olsson to showcase our abilities to closely coordinate activities with many project stakeholders and the general public in order to provide a design that meets many different needs,” said Ryan Kosola, PE, CFM, Olsson’s project manager. “We are honored and excited to be selected for this project.”
As part of the project, Olsson will provide survey, design, environmental permitting, geotechnical, and extensive public involvement services.
“Public involvement will be a key component of this project,” Ryan said. “There are many area neighborhood groups, businesses, and other stakeholders that will have key roles in the design.”
Design on the project is scheduled to start in January 2013, and it will be substantially complete by the end of 2014. Construction is tentatively scheduled to take place in 2015.
